Stella Broughton (Barrow) Thomas was born in 1886 to Charlotte Eleanor (Harris) Barrow and Richard John Barrow, and had siblings John Varian Barrow, Lionel Richard Barrow, Dulcie Eleanor (Barrow) Brabin, Eveline Crystal (Barrow) Brabin, and Lucy Emma Barrow. Stella Thomas died at age 79 years old in 1965.

In 1886, in the year that Stella Broughton (Barrow) Thomas was born, on January 5th, Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson's book the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was published. Immediately popular, the paperback book was sold for $1 in the U.S. - almost $25 today. Stevenson's stepson said that he wrote the first draft in under 3 days.

In 1901, she was merely 15 years old when shortly after beginning his second term, President McKinley was assassinated by the self proclaimed anarchist Leon Czolgosz.
