He had siblings Martha Ann Waddington, William Waddington, Mary Waddington, George Waddington, Anna Waddington, and Stephen Waddington. John was baptized on January 22, 1871 at St. John the Baptist's Church in Misson. John Waddington died at age 77 years old on January 15, 1948 at Royal Infirmary in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire County, and was buried on January 19, 1948 at St. Nicholas' Church in Upper Cumberworth.

In 1902, at the age of 32 years old, John was alive when the first Rose Bowl game was played in Pasadena, California. Called the "Tournament East–West football game" at the time, the Michigan Wolverines (East) played the Stanford Indians (West) - the Wolverines won 49 - 0. (The Stanford captain requested an end to the game with 8 minutes remaining.) The Tournament of Roses Parade began in 1890 and the football game began as a way to boost tourism in the area.
