    The Advertiser. Adelaide. 21st July 1941. Driver Joseph Douglas Clark, third son of Mr. J. Stead Clark, of Fullarton, has been reported killed in action on July 5. He was 33. He enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, and left Australia in May 1940. His two brothers served in the last war.

In 1908, in the year that Joseph Douglas Clark was born, a 7.1 earthquake and the resulting tsunami killed 70,000 to 100,000 people in southern Italy and Sicily. The earthquake, lasting 30 to 40 seconds, occurred in the Strait of Messina which was between the region of Calabria (at the "toe" of Italy) and the island of Sicily and destruction from it occurred in a 186 mile radius. It was the most destructive earthquake ever to hit Europe.

In 1914, Joseph was only 6 years old when in only his second big-screen appearance, Charlie Chaplin played the Little Tramp, his most famous character. The silent film was made in January and released the following year. Of the character, Chaplin said: "On the way to the wardrobe I thought I would dress in baggy pants, big shoes, a cane and a derby hat. I wanted everything a contradiction: the pants baggy, the coat tight, the hat small and the shoes large." The moustache was added to age his 24-year-old face without masking his expressions.
