Joseph Edgar Lefoe was born in 1873 to Levi Lefoe and Jane Martin, and had siblings Louisa Ann Martin Lefoe, John Henry Lefoe, Fredrick Martin Lefoe, Author William Lefoe, Frances Jane Lefoe, Alfred Earnest Lefoe, Thomas James Lefoe, William Henry Lefoe, and Charles Nicol Lefoe. Joseph Lefoe died at age 28 years old in 1901.

In 1873, in the year that Joseph Edgar Lefoe was born, on September 18th, the New York stock market crash - due to the failure of a number of banks - began the Panic of 1873. After the boom following the Civil War, the Coinage Act of 1873 and other factors led to the market crash. Thus began the "Long Depression" - also called the "Great Depression" until the 1930's.

In 1888, Joseph was only 15 years old when on January 12th, the 'Schoolhouse Blizzard' blanketed Dakota Territory. Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas were hit, leaving 235 dead. Many of those who perished were children on their way home from school. The day was relatively warm when it began and the blizzard hit unexpectedly, catching most by surprise.
