2 Memories, Stories & Photos about Catherine

April 18, 1906 Kitty survives The Great Quake
My Great Grandmother survived The Great Quake and Fire in 1906. It is the 118th Anniversary today. With her husband, Pierce, and two small children Nick( 3) and Mary(6), the Kirwan Family lost their South of Market business to the quake, and then their home to the dynamite lines, created to stop The Great Fire. Unfortunately, the fire was not stopped. The family was given 15 minutes in their beautiful home before evacuating it and moving to a tent in Golden Gate Park.

My gosh what a story....fantastic that you have this information so many years later. Thank you for sharing.

Family has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area now for 4 generations. We put together a blog about the great earthquake at The San Francisco Earthquake - April 18, 1906.

Taken about 1900 in SanFrancisco, CA - the portrait was taken from their home the morning of April 18, 1906 after the home survived The Great Quake. The home was then dynamited by SF Fire Department in a attempt to stop the Ham and Eggs Fire that devoured San Francisco. It is one of three portraits, which also included one of Mary Kirwan( age 6) and her father, Kitty’s husband, Pierce “ The Duke” Kirwan. The family owned and operated a successful bar in the South of Market District, at 4th and Brannan Streets.
