He had siblings Wesley Albert Arnold Thwaites, Winifred Thwaites, Stanley William Thwaites, Edith Amy Thwaites, Daphne May Thwaites, Eivion Anne Thwaites, Dorothy Amy Thwaites, Kenneth William Thwaites, and William Eric Thwaites. He married Annie Florence Kingdom in 1922, and had a child Keith Norman Thwaites. Laurie Thwaites died at age 63 years old in 1965 in Carlton, City of Melbourne County.

They eventually got a 10% raise and their workday was reduced from 10 hours to 9. Because winter was coming and most people at the time heated their homes with coal, President Teddy Roosevelt arbitrated between the owners and the workers - the first time that the Federal government arbitrated in a strike.
