She had siblings Wesley Albert Arnold Thwaites, Stanley William Thwaites, Edith Amy Thwaites, Daphne May Thwaites, Eivion Anne Thwaites, Laurie Thomas Victor Thwaites, Dorothy Amy Thwaites, Kenneth William Thwaites, and William Eric Thwaites. Winifred Thwaites married Ronald Kenneth Iselin on December 10, 1954, and died at age 92 years old on January 3, 2002.

The organization focused on legal strategies designed to confront the critical civil rights issues of the day - which included lynching and segregation in schools. The goal was to secure for all people the rights guaranteed in the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the United States Constitution.
