He had siblings Winifred Thwaites, Stanley William Thwaites, Edith Amy Thwaites, Daphne May Thwaites, Eivion Anne Thwaites, Laurie Thomas Victor Thwaites, Dorothy Amy Thwaites, Kenneth William Thwaites, and William Eric Thwaites. He married Eleanor Mildre Grace Thwaites in 1920, and had children George Wesley Thwaites and William Edwin Thwaites. Wesley Thwaites died at age 57 years old on October 26, 1955 in Heidelberg, City of Banyule County.

In 1898, in the year that Wesley Albert Arnold Thwaites was born, on March 24th, Robert Allison of Pennsylvania became the first person to buy an American-built car. He bought a Winton, which he had seen in an advertisement in Scientific American. The Winton, built in Ohio, was made by hand and came with a leather roof, padded seats, gas lamps, and tires made by B.F. Goodrich.

In 1907, he was merely 9 years old when the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.
