Lillian Jessie Larter 1886 - 1976

Lillian Jessie (Larter) Larter of Fitzroy, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born in 1886 in Collingwood to William Joseph Orton Larter and Louisa Bartlett Larter. She had siblings Helena Ethel Larter, Alfred Ernest Larter, Frederick Charles Larter, Edwin Herbert Larter, Arthur Stanley Larter, Doris Edith Larter, Louisa Mary (Larter) Hobbs, and William Joseph Orton Larter. She married Francis Augustus Huxley in 1914, and had a child Frances Louisa Harriett Huxley. Lillian Larter died at age 90 years old in 1976 in Fitzroy.

In 1886, in the year that Lillian Jessie Larter was born, on February 14th, the first train left Los Angeles for the East -by the way of the transcontinental railroad - with a cargo of oranges. Due to irrigation and the import of water, Los Angeles was the ideal place to grow oranges - which became a popular addition to Christmas stockings.

In 1898, when she was just 12 years old, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men.
