William Joseph Orton Larter of Fitzroy, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born in 1887 in Collingwood to William Joseph Orton Larter and Louisa Bartlett Larter. He had siblings Lillian Jessie Larter, Helena Ethel Larter, Alfred Ernest Larter, Frederick Charles Larter, Edwin Herbert Larter, Arthur Stanley Larter, Doris Edith Larter, and Louisa Mary (Larter) Hobbs. He married Winifred May Towan in 1911, and had a child William Orton Rudd Larter. William Larter died at age 79 years old on October 9, 1967 in St Kilda, Port Phillip City County.

In 1887, in the year that William Joseph Orton Larter was born, on January 28th, the largest recorded snowflakes fell in a snowstorm in Fort Keogh, Montana. They were supposed to have been 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick. A rancher in the area said that they were “larger than milk pans”. A Wild West tall tale? Not according to the Guinness World Records book.

In 1894, when he was only 7 years old, large reserves of oil were discovered on the Osage Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Previously thought to be "useless" land - not even good for farming - the tribe had bought the land themselves. The discovery of oil made the Osage the "richest group of people in the world" at the time.
