William Joseph Orton Larter of Fitzroy Australia was born in 1846 to Eleanor (Sullivan) Lanter and William Lanter. He married Louisa Bartlett Larter in 1883, and had children Louisa Mary (Larter) Hobbs, Lillian Jessie Larter, Helena Ethel Larter, William Joseph Orton Larter, Alfred Ernest Larter, Frederick Charles Larter, Edwin Herbert Larter, Arthur Stanley Larter, and Doris Edith Larter. William Larter died at age 84 years old in 1930 in Fitzroy.

In 1855, by the time he was just 9 years old, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.
