Lillian (Wastell) Nickelson of Kooyong, City of Stonnington County, VIC Australia was born in 1913 in Oakleigh, City of Monash County to Clara Ivy Lottie (Newport) Wastell and Arthur Edgar Wastell. She had siblings Roy Eric Arthur Wastell, Walter Henry Wastell, May Wastell, Charles John Wastell, Tessy Wastell, Ernest William Wastell, and John Charles Wastell. Lillian Nickelson died at age 55 years old in 1968 in Kooyong, City of Stonnington County.

In 1913, in the year that Lillian Wastell was born, the Philippine–American War ended for good in June. While the official end of the war was in 1902, fighting continued for several years. An estimated 200,000 to 250,000 total Filipino civilians died and although the U.S. viewed its role as a colonial presence as one of preparing the Philippines for independence, American colonization drastically changed the character off the culture. The Catholic Church was no longer the state religion and English became the primary language of the government.

In 1923, Lillian was merely 10 years old when on August 2nd, Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as the 30th President of the United States due to the sudden death of Warren G. Harding. After the scandals of the Harding presidency, Coolidge restored public confidence and was very popular. He won the Presidential election in 1924 but declined to run again in 1928.
