Tessy (Wastell) McLean of Oakleigh, City of Monash County, VIC Australia was born on January 14, 1920 in Oakleigh to Clara Ivy Lottie (Newport) Wastell and Arthur Edgar Wastell. She had siblings Roy Eric Arthur Wastell, Walter Henry Wastell, May Wastell, Lillian Wastell, Charles John Wastell, Ernest William Wastell, and John Charles Wastell. Tessy McLean died at age 95 years old on July 30, 2015.

In 1920, in the year that Tessy Wastell was born, on January 1, over 6000 people were arrested and put in prison because they were suspected of being communists. . Many had to be released in a few weeks and only 3 guns were found in their homes. The U.S. Department of Justice "red hunt" netted thousands of "radicals" and suspected "communists" and aliens were deported. But the "hunt" ended after Attorney General Palmer forecast a massive radical uprising on May Day and the day passed without incident.

He ran against Republican Governor Alf Landon (Kansas), defeating Landon in the popular vote by 60.8% to 36.5%. Vermont and Maine were the only two states in which Landon won. John Nance Garner IV became the Vice-President in this election.
