  • Introduction

Louis was was born to Atashni Macamic and Tama Pamanuk Abenakis Nation in Northern Canada. An outdoors man who loved hunting, fishing.. Louis was the oldest of three brothers, Adelard and Joseph. They had three sisters, Ouyu, which means Rainbow, Dyant, which means Deer, and Istas, meaning snow in English. All are deceased at this time. We believe their remains are in Canada with their husbands. Louis migrated to the U.S. (his name was changed to Macamaux by border guards) He married Regina Lajoie. Together they had three children : Reginald Joseph Macamaux born 1919, Albert O Macamaux born 1921, and Doris Macamaux, born 1923. (All currently deceased) Louis was my Grandfather and ever since I can remember he took me to every POW WOW he could find and tell me of his youth in Canada and of his father Atashni and what a great hunter he was. At the POW WOWS he would very often join in the Native Dances. He is greatly missed. Reggie Macamaux

Fishing
When I was about 10 years old he would take me fishing in the Ten Mile River
for catfish and eels. One night we ran out of bait and he decided to check
other spots along the river to see if other fishermen had left their bait behind.
Being only 10 years old I found it spooky in the woods at night. On his way
back to where I was he started swearing and cursing. No idea what happened,
but he shortly returned. I asked why he was screaming and he said he found
a small canvass bag and stuffed his hands in it to hopefully find some worms.
What he stuffed hands into was a half bag full of human waste. He was not a
happy grandpa for the rest of the night. Believe me I had trouble not to laugh.

A great man and a better Grandfather. He loved hunting, fishing, and trapping. But most of all was very proud of his Native Heritage. Born in 1895 he was the first son born to Atashni Macamic and Tama Pamanuk of the Abenaki Nation. He also had two brothers and 3 sisters, whose name escape my mind. A proud man he loved to hunt, fish, and trap. He took me with him every chance he had teaching me all he knew about life in the wild. He was the oldest of 6 Children born to Atashni Macamic and Tama Pamanuk he passed away in 1964 in the State of Rhode Island leaving behind his wife Regina who passed away almost 15 years later.
