  • Introduction

When Louis Vevea (Vivier) was born on March 18, 1852, in Clinton, New York, his father, Louis, was 22 and his mother, Elisabeth, was 18. He married Josephine "Josie" Vadeboncoeur on February 10, 1872, in Osseo, Minnesota. "Monday forenoon about ten o'clock a terrible accident occurred in the lath room of Reed & Sherwood's lumber mill. It seems that Louis Vevea and another young man were sawing shingle binders at the bolting saw. One board, which was to be sawed, became broken, and when it was being taken away the broken piece fell upon the saw. On the instant there was imparted to it the speed of lightning; it struck Vevea on the right side just below the ribs. He staggered, started to run, and would have fallen, but was caught by one of the work men. He was conveyed to the office, and, as soon as possible, Dr. Giddings was called. The physician pronounced the bones unbroken, but the internal injuries serious. A team was procured, and he was carried to his home. During all this time he retained his consciousness. About one o'clock [Sept 01, 1879] he died. The piece of board which struck him was about two and one-half feet long, five inches wide, and one inch in thickness. He was about twenty seven years of age, and leaves a wife and three children." Actually, he had four children, the 4thwas born 5 1/2 months after Louis died.
