  • Professional Career

As Aunt Mabel's marriage failed in a time that there were not the social supports of today, she had a hard go of it, as the saying goes. However, my Mom reports, "Mabel was an excellent telephone operator and was employed for years by Proctor and Schwartz. " About Proctor and Schwartz, I think this is an accurate link. . Evidently, Proctor and Schwartz was part of the history of Proctor|Silex
  • Personal Life & Family

This also comes from my Mother, Nancy Diehl Singer. This time it is from her biography, “Nobody ever gave me an Old Computer” in the chapter entitled Family Visiting. It was always fun to visit my Aunt Mabel, except for one thing. Her husband had deserted her leaving her with two small boys to raise. She was an operator for Proctor and Schwartz, and struggled hard to keep their home going. [ Proctor and Schwartz was a predecessor of Proctor|Silex .] She never got over his leaving her to marry another woman without getting divorced. She had a bright side though. She could tickle the ivories from the time she was just a tot, and all by ear. Music just flowed from her, and her sons were somewhat the same. Aunt Mabel also loved flowers! Did she ever. In Oak Lane where she lived during my early years, she had a gigantic rock garden. She had transformed a huge deposit of boulders into a thing of beauty. Later she moved to a former schoolhouse in Roelofs near Yardley, PA. I loved flowers, and I learned so much from her. She was not too far from the train, and she would be talking about Frank, her husband, while the train whistled on by and drowned her out. Later she moved to California with Ken, her son. I never saw her again, but we would write. This comes from my mother, Nancy Diehl Singer (1926 - 2024) who's mother was Babette DeBinder Davis Diehl, Aunt Mabel's younger sister. (1903-1965). I am Carol Singer - May 17, 1961. I never met my great Aunt Mabel, but I did correspond with her. She died when I was 20 and I will be 63 this year. Mom reports that her grandfather Davis had red hair and a red mustache. Her daughters Reba and Mabel had bright red hair. Submitted March 4, 2024.

This is Aunt Mabel with her sons Charles and Ken. I have no idea who is who, as Mom, Nancy Diehl Singer (d. 1/26/2024), did not label this. Her mother and my grandmother Babette DeBinder Davis Diehl was Mabel's younger sister.

My Aunt Mabel
I never met my Aunt, but we did correspond. She died when I was 20, and I will be 63 in May of 2024. My Mother, who just died 1/26/2024 wrote of her in her family tree files. Here is what she wrote:
On May 2, 1908 she was married to Frank Anthony McKnight by the mayor of Wilmington, DE. Mabel was an excellent telephone operator and was employed for years by Proctor and Schwartz.

Evidently, Proctor Schwartz was in the history of Proctor|Silex.

On a side note, like her father and sister Reba, she had bright red hair.

2/19/2024. Please note: I am looking for Mabel's grave so I can connect her to her parents and siblings at the Find a Grave website.

2/21/ 2024 I have found her burial place, at sea.

Need help to find a grave yard
I am wanting to find the grave yard for this church.

It seems that Aunt Mabel's younger brother, Joseph Davis (b. Oct. 18, 1896; d. June 15, 1900 ) may be buried there or there are records there. This is strange, as his parents and siblings are buried here, as this is his father, Charles Sr. website

As you see, all of Mabel's siblings are accounted for except Joe. (There were 8 Davis children.) I have word out to Find a Grave regarding doing a memorial for Mabel as she was buried at sea.

Can anyone help me connect my great uncle Joe to his parents and siblings?
