  • Introduction

    Maria Carolina (Anderson) Hedberg's parents were Nils Peter Anderson (1834 - 1916), born in Sweden, and Emma Lovisa Martinsdotter, who died in 1879 in Sweden. She had siblings Jonan, Anton, Emma, and Gus. Maria married Gotthard Hedberg on June 14, 1889, in Seattle Washington. When they married, Gotthard was a logger, age 30. Maria was 28 and a "domestic". Both of Maria's and Gotthard's parents had been born in Sweden. When Maria was 40, she was in Fairbanks Alaska and still married to Gotthard, 42, and now living with their son Frank, 10. A decade later, Maria and Gotthard were living in Mabana, Washington, and Maria was now a naturalized United States citizen. Gotthard's brother, Otto, 54, was living with them, as was their son, Frank, 20. Gotthard was a farmer, son Frank was helping on the farm, and brother Otto was a laborer in a logging camp.

Probably Maria Carolina Anderson, married to Gottherd Hedberg.

Photo found in an antique shop in Seattle, Washington. No info listed on the back of the photo, but included were 2 other photos, one of which was labeled "Mary & Gottherd Hedberg". In researching I found that Gottherd Hedberg's wife was Maria Carolina Anderson, born February 22, 1869 in Sweden. The woman in this photo matches exactly the women in the photo with Gottherd (also uploaded on AncientFaces).

AncientFaces co-founder Pam has rescued a lot of photos over the years and often reunites them with their families. This photo of Maria Carolina (Anderson) Hedberg is one of those photos.

Maria was born in Sweden, emigrated to the United States, and married a logger in Washington State. She and her husband Gotthard lived in Washington and Alaska, and they had one son. Maria died in Puyallup, Washington and was buried on Camano Island in Washington.

What stands out to me about this photo is how fashionable Maria is. The gloves, the hat, the blouse, the tiny waist. Although she was the immigrant wife of a logger & farmer who lived in the "wild west", she kept up her style. Discover more about Maria's life and see more photos

Maria & Gottherd Hedberg Seattle Washington 1890
"Mary & Gotthard Hedberg" Handwritten on back.

Gotthard was born in 1887 in Byske, Wasterbotten, Sweden and emmigrated to Seattle in June, 1889. He married Maria Carolina Anderson also in June, 1889. In 1910 the couple lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, and in 1920 they lived in Mabana, Island Co., Washington. They had a son named Frank.
