Mode Rupert Glanville was born on June 7, 1890 in Heber City, Wasatch County, Utah United States to Charles Oliver Glanville and Mary Regina Glanville, and had siblings Hope Maxine Milburn, Emory Swen Glanville, Blaine Charles Glanville, and Jean Joy Glanville. He married Florence (Smith) Glanville in 1910 in Heber City, Wasatch County, and they were married until Mode's death on December 19, 1971 in Park City, Summit County. He had children Hal Lynn Glanville, Florence Ruth Homer, Mary Naomi Flint, Gerald Scott Glanville, and Douglas Mark Glanville. Mode Glanville was buried on December 23, 1971 in Park City, Summit County.

In 1890, in the year that Mode Rupert Glanville was born, on October 9th, in Satory, France, the first fixed-wing, steam powered aircraft flew. "Ader Éole" flew, uncontrolled, for about 160 ft. at a height of just under 8 inches off the ground.

In 1907, by the time he was 17 years old, the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.
