Florence Ruth Homer 1913 - 2002

Florence Ruth (Glanville Johnson) Homer was born on December 31, 1913 in Heber City, Wasatch County, Utah United States to Mode Rupert Glanville and Florence (Smith) Glanville, and had siblings Hal Lynn Glanville, Mary Naomi Flint, Gerald Scott Glanville, and Douglas Mark Glanville. She married Barney Sigmund Johnson in 1942 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, and they were married until Barney's death on August 6, 1971 in Salt Lake City. She married Paul Logan Homer in 1973 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, and they were married until Paul's death on December 10, 1995 in Salt Lake City. Florence Homer died at age 88 years old on May 21, 2002 in Heber City, Wasatch County, and was buried on May 25, 2002 in Park City, Summit County.

In 1913, in the year that Florence Ruth Homer was born, the Philippine–American War ended for good in June. While the official end of the war was in 1902, fighting continued for several years. An estimated 200,000 to 250,000 total Filipino civilians died and although the U.S. viewed its role as a colonial presence as one of preparing the Philippines for independence, American colonization drastically changed the character off the culture. The Catholic Church was no longer the state religion and English became the primary language of the government.

In 1927, she was only 14 years old when the first "talkie" (a movie with music, songs, and talking), The Jazz Singer, was released. Al Jolson starred as a cantor's son who instead of following in his father's footsteps as expected, becomes a singer of popular songs. Banished by his father, they reconcile on his father's deathbed. It was a tear-jerker and audiences went wild - especially when they heard the songs. Thus begun the demise of silent films and the rise of "talkies".
