He was born on March 19, 1921 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York, USA and had sisters Lena Elvira Ostrander (1917-1992) and Mildred Margarette Ostrander (1919-1998). At the age of 20, he registered for the draft on February 14, 1942, in Mayville, Chautauqua, New York, marking the beginning of his military journey. On July 8, 1942, Robert enlisted in Buffalo, New York, choosing to join the Army as a Private. Robert served his country with honor and commitment until his honorable discharge on December 3, 1945. On June 29, 1946 he married Beatrice Walker (1926–1959) in Carroll, Chautauqua, New York, USA. The couple went on to have two daughters together and lived in Jamestown, New York, USA and Carroll, Chautauqua, New York, USA.
