He had siblings Catherine A. "Kay" Ostrander (1912-2003), Frances I. Ostrander (1914-1945), Ivan John Ostrander (1917-2009), Olive Mae Ostrander (1919-1980), and Joel David Ostrander (1921-1944). On July 4, 1937 he married Ruth Eve Boyle (1913–2006) in Schoharie, Schoharie, New York, USA and they had a son together, Brian Ostrander who did not survive (1941-1942). At the age of 24, he registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, in Rensselaer, New York. Then on August 5, 1943, in Albany, New York, Robert enlisted in the armed forces. He became a part of the Selectees (Enlisted Men) and held the rank of Private. Robert served his country faithfully until his honorable discharge on February 23, 1946.
