    Robert John Ostrander was born on February 7, 1920 in Brooklyn, Kings, NY, USA to parents George Joseph Ostrander (1885-1963) and Anna Foxton (1893-1974). He was one of three children with siblings George J Ostrander (1917-1977) and Louise Adelaide Ostrander (1924-1999). At the age of 21, he registered for the draft on July 16, 1941, in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. Standing at 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 145 pounds, Robert had a sallow complexion, brown hair, and brown eyes. On March 6, 1942, Robert enlisted at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York and he joined the ranks as a Private. Assigned to the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers of the United States Army, Robert served as a selectee enlisted man. His service number was 32224002, and he was a valued component of the military force composed of selectees. On September 10, 1944 he married Mary Ellen Cassidy (1922–1976) in Brooklyn, Ny and the couple went on to have two children together including a son, Robert Ostrander.
