Sam was a carpenter although he would try other jobs through the depression. He built the latticework rotunda at Coburg State School. He also built a wheelbarrow for my Dad, made out of thick planks of wood. Dad said it was too heavy to lift when it was empty, let alone when it had something in it. It never broke. Sam and Dad built a bungalow ,in our backyard, when Sam was in his 70s.
  • Personal Life & Family

Sam may have been born on a ship. That was one of the stories about his birth. He never had a birth certificate. Another story around his birth was that, his mother didn't want to register Sam's birth, because she didn't want him to have a diphtheria vaccine. She feared that he might die from it. His Aunt claimed the family inheritance because Sam could not legally prove his parentage. There was also a suggestion, that he may have been a foster child. No evidence of this either.
