Spencer Gerald Pope was born in 1892 to Samuel Pope and Sarah Jane (Bedford) Pope, and had siblings Hubert Graham Pope, Verdon Leslie Pope, Charles James Bedford Pope, Samuel Ernest Pope, and Willis Gordon Pope. He married Eva Beula (Bolt) Pope, and had children Irene Lillian Pope and Stanley Spencer Pope. Spencer Pope died at age 73 years old in 1965.

In 1892, in the year that Spencer Gerald Pope was born, on August 4th, the father and stepmother of Lizzie Borden were found murdered. Lizzie was accused of the crime and on June 20th of the next year, she was acquitted of murder by a jury. But she was never acquitted in the public mind.

In 1919, he was 27 years old when in the summer and early autumn, race riots erupted in 26 U.S. cities, resulting in hundreds of deaths and even more people being badly hurt. In most cases, African-Americans were the victims. It was called the "Red Summer". Men who were returning from World War I needed jobs and there was competition for those jobs among the races. Tension was heightened by the use by many companies of blacks as strikebreakers.
