Thomas Gardiner Brown of Eaglehawk, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC Australia was born in 1876 in Eaglehawk to Robert Brown and Jane Gardiner Brown. He had siblings Catherine Brown, Robert Nixon Brown, Eli Harland Brown, James Gardiner Brown, John Nixon Brown, and Harland Brown. He married Emily Jane (Strugnell) Brown in 1909, and had children Archibald Stanley Strugnell, Emily Jane Brown, Jessie Isabell Brown, Fisher Arthur Brown, and Estelle Brown. Thomas Brown died at age 39 years old on November 12, 1916 in Eaglehawk.

In 1876, in the year that Thomas Gardiner Brown was born, on February 14th, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. So did Elisha Gray. A month later, on March 7th, Bell was granted the patent and on the 10th, he made his first successful telephone call - in which he said: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."
