He married Mary Ann Shaw, and had children Amelia Ann Leake, Thankful Fidelia Leake, Emma Celestia Leake, Ida Josephine Leake, Mary Adeline Leake, William Wilson Israel Leake, and George Henry Leake. William Leake died at age 60 years old on March 22, 1888 in Pleasantville, Marion County, IA.

In 1827, in the year that William Israel Leake was born, Englishman John Walker invented the first friction match, which he named Lucifer. The match consisted of a wooden stick coated with sulphur and tipped with a mixture of sulphide of antimony, chlorate of potash, and gum. A box of 50 matches was one shilling and came with folded sandpaper to use to strike a match.
