Andrew D Swieter was born on March 13, 1922 in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, USA to parents Drewes Swieter (1885-1935) and Geraldine Jager (1887-1988). He had siblings Bertha Swieter (1912-1989), Peter Drew Swieter (1914-1994), and Henry Swieter (1918-2010). He was a student at Grand Rapids Christian High School and graduated in 1940. Andrew Swieter enlisted in the Army on October 29, 1942, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. His military serial number was 36407218. At the time of his enlistment, he was assigned to the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers. Andrew was given the rank of Private, Selectees (enlisted Men). His enlistment was for the duration of the war or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law. Andrew was part of the Army and was enlisted on October 29, 1942. He served for almost four years and was discharged on March 4, 1946. Andrew married Evelyn Kieviet (1921–2010) on November 19, 1943 in Grand Rapids. The couple went on to have 5 children together.
