Benjamin E. Meredith
I’ve “rescued” an old photograph identified as that of Benjamin E. MEREDITH which was taken at the Taber Studio in San Francisco, CA and dated August 1882. Benjamin is listed as 18 years old at the time. Someone has also written “Wire Chief, Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas, New Mexico” and “Manager Deming, New Mexico Local Office of Western Telegraph Company” on the back of the photograph. I’m hoping to locate someone from this MEREDITH Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of his family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.

Thanks,
Shelley

A short research of his name and location led to a news article in the late 1890s where a Benjamin E. Meredith was the head of the Chinese Bureau. If anyone has a newspapers.com subscription, perhaps they can find the details on this.

So, some research said that most men used petroleum jelly, bear oil, Macassar oil, or bay rum for their hair. There were commercial pomades and since he had a good job . . . bet he bought it.

Diana Covey Frymyer: well, no not really! In the early to mid 1800s folks with very curly hair would use axle grease and a hot butter knife to straighten their hair!
