Dorothy (Schutte) Doss
Dorothy Pauline (Schutte) Doss was the daughter of Fredrick G Schutte (1892 - 1937) and Elsie J Brewster (1898 - 1989). While her parents were both born in Virginia, she was born in Philadelphia and had siblings Thomas, Ralph, Leslie, Barbara, Gloria, and Harold Schutte. By 1930 the family lived in Manchester, Chesterfield County Virginia, and then moved to New York between 1935-1940. Dorothy married Desmond Thomas Doss (1919 -2006) on August 17th 1942 in Richmond Virginia. They were married for 49 years and had one son Desmond Doss Jr. Tragically, she lost her life when her husband Desmond lost control of their car while he was driving her to her breast cancer treatment and they crashed. He believes that she died instantly. The experiences of her husband Desmond in WW2 are portrayed in the movie "Hacksaw Ridge". For additional information about her husband, see Desmond Doss The Real Life Hero of Hacksaw Ridge. See Sticking by her husband’s side for additional insight into their relationship.

Desmond Thomas Doss
Desmond Thomas Doss was an American hero, a devout Christian, and a model of courage and selflessness. He was born on February 7, 1919 in Lynchburg, Virginia to parents William Thomas Doss (1893-1989) and Bertha Edward Oliver (1899-1983). He had two siblings; Audrey Wyatt Doss (1916-2003) and Harold Edward Doss (1922-2007). Doss grew up in poverty and left school after just one year of high school. Despite his lack of formal education, Doss was a skilled worker and held a variety of jobs throughout his life, including carpenter's assistant, blacksmith, and mechanic. However, it was his service in the United States Army during World War II that earned Doss his place in history. As a conscientious objector, Doss refused to carry a weapon or participate in any act of violence. Despite facing ridicule and opposition from his fellow soldiers and superiors, Doss proved himself to be a brave and dedicated soldier, earning the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Okinawa. He also saved (by his count 50, by the Army's count 75) men in the Battle of Hacksaw Ridge. For more information and a number of photos highlighting this man's life see Desmond Doss The Real Life Hero of Hacksaw Ridge. After the war, Doss returned to civilian life, where he continued to live by his faith and his principles of non-violence and compassion. He worked as a barber, a salesman, and a maintenance mechanic at a shipbuilding company. Doss also became a popular speaker and advocate for veterans' issues, traveling around the country to share his experiences and his message of peace.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
