If you have a Christmas tree, is it as impressive as this 1923 tree? It looks like it wants to burst through the ceiling - I guess it's not a new thing to pick the tallest tree possible!
Tracy J. Thurman oh, I understand but my family didn't come from wealthy folks. We were a good family and you can be too without all the riches. Our riches weren't monetary but riches in many other ways. Sorry for the rant but society today doesn't paint a cheerful picture. Wishing you well.
Francyl Lynn Greenlee Watch the movie "The Bishop's Wife". with Cary Grant. The best Christmas movie. Grant was an angel and magically decorated the tree. Loved
Francyl Lynn Greenlee oh yes they were. My dad was a child back in 1923 and he said their trees were decorated. My grandparents were rather poor so I'm sure they weren't as elaborate as the one in the picture tho.
Francyl Lynn Greenlee I agree, and how everyone misunderstood what you meant...trimmed as in cut to a typical tree shape, they are now cut to look like a triangle, but before they were just as they were.
Maggie MacKay have you ever gotten a tree from a tree farm or a Christmas tree lot? Unless you specify you want a natural tree, you are going to get one that is pruned every year Into that triangle shape.
l live in Scotland, when l go to buy my tree they are all pretty much the same shape...l've never had to trim one that l can remember..best one l bought was a live one 5 years ago, l kept repotting it, but this summer planted it in my back garden as it was getting too big. This year is the first time l've bought an artificial one...it's really quite small but less hassle..it looks real 🎄..won't miss picking up the needles 😀
Use to people went out in their fields and cut a tree down..no if you bought one, it wasn't trimed to be perfect. I remember when we moved to the country, as a teen, went to the woods and cut down our own cedar tree. So different than our city tree. I did not know that trees had a aroma.
My mother was born in 1919 and was the last of 9 children. When she was a child Santa Claus set up the tree on Christmas Eve and the family awoke to a decorated tree on Christmas morning.
Jessica Murray May I ask which area of the country your mother grew up? I am curious about traditions. I have never met any Texans who had this particular one, but I know it is a common thing in England. Again, just interested in how traditions start.
Jessica Murray thats how it was for us children too,we got to hang 1 ornament befor we went to bed along with our stockings hung off the radeator ....woke up to a trimmed tree ect...
I grew up in a Victorian house that was a Rectory. We were expected to have a big tree, well- decorated like this for a parishioner open house!
Several times I remember Dad having to chop the top off the tree to make room for the Angel or star!
I , of course, the youngest, had to crawl in and water the damn thing!
The only family that had a larger tree
was the wealthy doctor’s next door!
Beautiful, probably fairly well-to-do, family, enjoying Christmas. It's very sad to realize that even the youngest child (the little boy of maybe 5 or 6) is certainly long passed from this life now. We wonder what lives they led, how they survived the Great Depression and World War II. The older of the 2 boys seated on the floor, cross-legged in front, looks around 10-11 years and would be the same age as my mother (born in 1912). A wonderful frozen-in-time image which leaves us with so many questions!
A lot were decorated by the parents, after the children went to sleep, the gifts were put under and when they woke it must have been very much a surprise
It's beautiful, we are all searching for the "perfect tree"; but what we have forgotten, myself included, is that it represents a beautiful gesture, and love of family. For me, I have always preferred a real tree, and with that comes some challenges! I remember my Dad securing the tree with twine, and nailing it behind the wall trim! I miss those days!😁🎄🎄
Kristina Kovacevic Duke 🤣🤣 omg that’s perfect! Literally had to use every ornament I own just to decorate the darn thing! Merry Christmas to your beautiful family as well!
