Now that's a head full of curls! Natural? Rag curls? Tongs?

Secondo me,sono capelli naturali ben curati. Anche allora usavano espedienti per avere bei capelli lucidi e abboccolati magari con l'uso del ferro o altro mezzo.

They look shaped to me. It's the largeness at the bottom of the curl.

Yeah I have had similar natural curls, but not as "curled" all the way through. My aunt use to have natural curls too but they had smaller "loops". These ones looks "made"/shaped.

Interesting, now I'm going to have to Google how they would use the tongs...I can't even imagine how hard that would be

Where have they gone to-the little girls
With natural manners and natural curls;
Who love their dollies and like their toys,
And talk of something besides the boys?

Rag ,My mom did our hair with clean old socks
Probably, she has naturally curly hair since there are waves very close to the scalp. You wouldn't put heated tongs that close to the skin. I pity her if she had to sleep with rag strips tied that tightly and close to the scalp! T

Those large curls were no doubt created by using rags or tongs to get the big, fat curls.

They were called sausage curls or bologna curls and were popular for women through a lot of the 1800s. Later, in the 1920's and 1930's, you mostly saw those curls on little girls (think Shirley Temple)...curled more tightly than this lady's, but the same style.

Curlers and a hair piece. Not uncommon in the 1870s and 1880s to have a wiglet put on the top or back of your natural hair to enhance the effect.

My grandmother curled my mother’s hair with bamboo sticks. How, I haven’t a clue. But she did have beautiful candy curls as a child.

Hair has been called a woman's "crowning glory" - it's certainly been a mode of expression over the centuries.
In the 1800's, brushing your hair 100 times a day was a popular way to beautify it - but hair was usually washed only once a month. And shampoo wasn't invented until the end of the 1800's. For women, ...
