Her smile, photos of this period were often more somber.

And she has pretty good teeth since she probably didn't have braces! :)
I love the embroidery on the dress. It had to have been done by hand and not some fancy Singer sewing machine. True art form.

Ostriches are not extinct, and are not killed for their feathers.

I like that the waist doesn't look cinched in tightly. Maybe it just looks that way due to the side angle.

Teens styles are a different silhouette than earlier decades; The corsets were long-line, rather than cinched waisted.

Her outfit is stunning, but my favorite part of the picture is her smile. Folks usually didn't smile in photos back then, or least not my kin.

The exposure was long for a photo then so it's impressive that she held that expression for so long!

AncientFaces I hadn't thought about that...very true!

No, exposure times were not long by this time; much the same as today; people didn't smile in formal portraits because it was considered undignified. They thought one should look natural, and most people don't go about with big smiley faces all the time.

Lois DeArmond You may be right! Mark Twain said ""I think a photograph is a most important document, and there is nothing more damning to go down to posterity than a silly, foolish smile caught and fixed forever."
