my father went through the 6th grade at Mt Vernon school. It was just uphill past the Holtz ranch of my Aunt Alma. He got a good education. In those days, I think he learned about as much in 6 grades as some learn in 12. In the summers, he went up into the mountains with the cattle. He did a lot of the hunting since he was the best shot, hiking into Hellhole for deer & packing them out on his back. he slept in the attic of the house becuse he liked to hear raindrops on the roof. He was born March 3, 1878 to John Hughes Holmes and Clarissa Angella Laine.
