Gua and Donald - Winthrop Niles Kellogg

Dr. Donald Agger Kellogg's father was Winthrop Niles Kellogg (1898-1972) who was a psychology professor at Indiana University. He was married to Mrs. Patricia Kellogg and they had three children. Kellogg is best remembered for his 'The Ape and The Child' study where he raised a chimpanzee as a twin to his son Donald. He thought that if kids raised by wolves become wolf-like, then could apes mimic humans? W.N. Kellogg made four films of his study that showed that the chimp (named Gua) did show signs of being more human. However, it is believed that there were unintended consequences where Donald began acting more chimp-like, so Winthrop ended his study rather abruptly (Reference: The Ape and the Child by W. N. Kellogg and L.A. Kellogg, New York: Whittlesay House, McGraw-Hill, 1933). Donald ended up doing fine for himself later in life. He graduated Indiana University and Harvard Medical school to become a psychiatrist who practiced at Bethesda. He married Lydia Ann Dashiells on August 28th 1955.
