Hugh Alan Johnson died on Monday, November 14, 2022, at the age of 86. Hugh was a true servant of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He loved God’s word and His creation. He will be remembered for his wisdom, love for people, and heart for education.

Hugh graduated from the University of Michigan, received his Master’s degree from Western Michigan University, served in the National Guard, taught at Fremont Christian School, and served as a principal in Christian schools for 30 years. Hugh served on the board of the Christian School Pension Fund, the board of the Non-Public School Accreditation Association, and as a deacon and elder in Christian Reformed churches. His last ministries were with Crossroads Bible Institute, volunteering with Kids Hope USA, and a card ministry where he painted watercolors and sent notes of encouragement to relatives, friends, church members, and neighbors.

Hugh is survived by his loving wife, Della, who he married in 1959. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Jeffrey and Julie Johnson, Rashelle and Ken Tamminga, and Kristin and John Niewoonder. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Jordan and Naomi Johnson, Taylor Johnson and friend, Brittany Heerema, Austin and Sarah Johnson, Lucas and Meredith Tamminga, Noah Tamminga, Gena Tamminga, Mitchell and Lorelle Niewoonder, Mariah Niewoonder and fiancé, Doug Nanzer, and Tristan Niewoonder; and one great-grandchild, Denver Johnson. He is also survived by his sister, Kathryn and Peter Sonetz; and sister-in-law, Irene Plaisier. Hugh was preceded in death by his father, Neal Johnson; and his parents, Carl and Genevieve Johnson; brother, Neal and Alice Johnson; parents-in-law, Arthur and Christina Plaisier; brothers-in-law, William Plaisier, Peter and Ruth Plaisier; and sisters-in-law, Gertrude Plaisier and Margaret and Harvey Kunnen.

A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Christian Reformed Church, 3617 Hillcrest Rd, Hudsonville, with Rev. Curt Walters officiating. The burial will take place at Fremont Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday, November 17, from 6-8 p.m. at the church. An additional time of visiting will be held on Friday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Memorial contributions in honor of Hugh Johnson may be made to Crossroads Bible Institute or a Christian school of choice.

I'm a Christian, and I'm a daughter of Allan B. Holbrook, now in heaven. My married name is Debby Stevens.
My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
