Matthew Helm Johnson, age 49, passed away on July 20, 2022. Matt was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on January 18, 1973. Growing up, he lived also in Marquette and Lansing and made many life long friends wherever he lived. Matt courageously fought a battle with cancer for over the past two years.

He is survived by his son, Alec Mathew Johnson; parents, Richard and Sandra Johnson; brother, Vincent (Marcia) Johnson; sister, Amy Johnson Clevenger; nephews, Gunnar, Henry, Sam and Sean. He is also survived by aunts, Mary Jo Dobrzenski of Littleton, CO, Barbara Ebert, Mequon, WI; uncle, Richard (Susan) Boes of Ludington, MI; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Elmer and Josie Johnson and maternal grandparents Marvin and Kathleen Boes, as well as; uncles, Bill Ebert and Darryl Dobrzenski. His namesake and Godfather, Matthew Amel also preceded him in death.

Growing up, Matt attended St. Gerard’s School and Lansing Catholic Central High School. He received his BA Degree at Eastern Michigan University and his Masters Degree at Wayne State University. He was the owner of Great Lakes Appraisal Company and worked in Real Estate. Matt was an avid MSU Spartan and Green Bay Packer Fan. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and especially his son, Alec Matthew who was “the light of his life.”

During his illness, in addition to his family, he was blessed to receive much support and care from many friends which was appreciated by Matt.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2022 at 10:30 AM at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 4437 W. Willow Hwy., Lansing , Michigan 48917, with a visitation one hour prior to service. A committal service will take place immediately after the service at St Joseph Cemetery. 2520 W. Willow St., Lansing MIchigan, 48917.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Matthew’s Memory to Indiana University, Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, 535 Barnhill Dr. RT330, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46202.

I'm a Christian, and I'm a daughter of Allan B. Holbrook, now in heaven. My married name is Debby Stevens.
My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
