I love this picture! Wonder if it’s a corn Cobb pipe. I’ve heard a few stories but never have seen it. And women’s usage of powdered snuff.

Suzanne Berglund-Edwards I'm pretty sure it's a corncob pipe - I made sure that my sis saw this, since our ancestors are from VA, WVA, and KY. I have always teased her that she should live out in the country with her corncob pipe and her shotgun on her lap, rocking on her front porch 😁

Suzanne Berglund-Edwards My greatgrandmother used snuff. She was loudly missionary baptist and EVERYTHING was a sin, according to her, EXCEPT snuff. Roflmbo

She refused to allow my sweet, gentle, quiet ggp to keep his nightcap wiskey in the house (because WISKEY was a SIN). She made him keep it out in the corncrib. And one summer day it blew up. Rofl. To hear the story it was a MAGNIFICENT sight. Smh

I had a great great great aunt who would smoke a corncob pipe while in a rocking chair on the front porch. She was viewed as pretty badass by the relatives.

That was the one thing my grandma remembered of her grandma. Her sitting on the hearth next to the fireplace, smoking her pipe.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
