Richard was born in Flint, Michigan on February 18, 1933, the son of Duane and Evelyn (Scott) Johnson. He married Sharon Zuidema on April 23, 1960, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She preceded him in death on July 13, 2012. He married Elizabeth Archer on October 5, 2013. She also preceded him in death on May 6, 2022.

Richard graduated from Flushing High School in 1951, where he was active with Future Farmers of America. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Ft. Sheridan, was a Map Maker in Germany, and was honorably discharged. Richard then attended Ferris State University on the GI Bill, earning an Associate's degree in printing. His working career was spent at The Flint Journal in the composing room, and later a District Manager. Dick had agricultural and equestrian interests beginning in childhood. His family enjoyed his stories about milking the cows on his parents farm and riding horses around Flushing with his friends. 50 years ago he purchased his farm where he was able to expand upon these interests. Over the years, Dick was involved in many committees, served on boards and did bible studies at Holy Cross Lutheran. In later years, Dick got a lot of enjoyment having lunch with his fellow Flint Journal retirees and going to the Wednesday country music jams.

Richard is survived by his children Mark (Sue) Johnson, Eric Johnson, Dana (Mark) Newvine, and Darrel Johnson; grandchildren, Megan (Jim) Nokielski, Brian Johnson, MacKenzie Johnson, Carter Johnson, Jessica Johnson, and Grace Newvine; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wives, Sharon & Elizabeth; and siblings, Donald Johnson & Susan Hawkins.

Debby Stevens
I'm a Christian, and I'm a daughter of Allan B. Holbrook, now in heaven. My married name is Debby Stevens.
My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
