Schmidt Wedding

Description:
I’ve “rescued” an old photograph of Ferdinand SCHMIDT and his bride along with two unnamed witnesses which was taken at the Hingtgen Studio in Wahpeton, ND. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900’s with Ferdinand and his bride appearing to be in their 30’s or 40’s at the time. Ferdinand is also identified as the brother of John S. SCHMIDT. I’m hoping to locate someone from this SCHMIDT Family so that the photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.

Thanks,
Shelley

I think it looks like that because of the sleeves being puffed at the shoulder. Remember Lady Diana's wedding dress? That puffy shoulder style creates a funny illusion.

She may not be a raving beauty, but the glasses are part of the problem. And we're used to seeing brides (and other women) in photos all made-up...contouring blush, eyeliner, mascara, eyebrows penciled in, lipstick, and with much more flattering hair styles. Take a look at some of the celebrities' photos taken of them without make-up and you would hardly recognize them.

She does look a lot younger than her new husband, but that's not unusual. I wouldn't be surprised if one or both of the witnesses were actually the groom's teenaged or young adult children from a previous marriage.

Many people back then married 2 or 3 times because of the prevalence of death in childbirth or from diseases we now can cure or prevent. Plus, men in some classes of society didn't marry until they were successful enough to support a wife and family. And then they married a woman young enough to be able to give them many children (so many children died in infancy then), so a lot were quite a few years older than their brides.

I think it's important to look at these old photos and remember to not judge them by modern standards, styles, or values.

My grandparents were born in 1897 & 1907. She was 15, he was 25 when they got married. They were married until my grandfather died in 1984. It was common for the man to take a young bride!

My folks married in the mid 1920's. My dad was 23 and my mom had just turned 16. That was considered very common.

I think back then a lot of ppl were poor and they had several kids. It might have been one way of having one less mouth to feed!!

In some cases, yes, like with more well-off families where the daughters were not supposed to go out to jobs. But in other cases, as with the poor and lower classes, the older kids often had some sort of jobs as well or contributed in some way to the family's survival.

Young married couples often lived with the bride's or groom's family because they couldn't afford a separate residence, and the family gained another person bringing in an income or helping to work on the farm without being paid, like a hired hand would be.

My dad was the oldest in his family, and, when he married my mom in the 1920s, she moved in with him with his family. His 3 youngest siblings were 2, 5, and 7 years old! My mom was there to help with the cooking, cleaning, and minding her little in-laws and also held a night shift job at a sewing factory and added to the family's income.

My mom was the 2nd youngest in her family, so when her older brothers got married, they brought their wives to live on the farm...where more hands were always needed...for several years before they got their own homes. It wasn't till her mother, who was a widow, moved into town because the farm was too much for her to handle that the older brothers set up their own residences. One brother actually stayed on the farm and built his own house after most of the acreage and the old house was sold.

I think that's one of the disadvantages of modern nuclear families. It used to be that grandparents and sometimes aunts and uncles lived more communally and helped raise the kids, provided income, and created a stronger sense of family. We've lost that aspect in favor of an independence that doesn't always give kids the sense of security and worth they might have had from living with extended family.

That's in general, of course. Some families in some regions of the country still do either live together or at least nearby.

She looks hopeful tho, not fearful. I think she must have remained quite small. I wonder how often she had been in front of a camera, there she is on her wedding day, it seems like it would be all too much for such a young girl of her day.

It’s the photography! People didn’t smile for several reasons, the photo shoot took like forever, cameras were a new thing, prior to them, it was all portraits. People that smiled a lot were thought to be drunk or a bit crazy! And last but not least, people only have movies to relate these pics to and we all know, Hollywood is not known for its historical acumen!

Homely and beautiful are subjective assessments, based on individual opinions and society's arbitrary standards. Your opinion that she is homely is no more true that anyone's opinion that she is pretty.

Self-righteous is defined as thinking oneself superior, which is what you seem to be doing in thinking your opinion of her looks is the only right judgment.
