Why does every old-timey photo have the people looking like they took a bunch of Xanax/ are about to walk out of the shot into an oncoming bus? Lol it must have really sucked to live back then
Because having one's photo taken 100 or so years ago was considered a serious thing to do. So people attempted to look serious. I have a great-grandparent photo that is very serious, though my great-grandfather was quite a humorous, active fellow until his very last days
If they smiled it usually blurred the photo! But I imagine she had a great smile and a fantastic laugh. She just looks like while trying to be so serious (the little smirk on her face) says she is dying to crack up!
The primary reason people were so stoic in old photos is because of the cameras. The subject had to stay perfectly still for the camera to get a clear exposure. Cameras didn't have different exposure speeds like the ones we have now. So, no, life back then didn't suck.
One need to study photography to fully understand why the cameras back then was time consuming and I have quite a bit of old and vintage photos that people did not smile because of it. It is not necessarily true that life sucked no.
