Pioneer - first farmer to grow potatoes at Albany W.A. The Albany Advertiser, August 1941. A PIONEER PASSES. The death on Friday, August 15, of Mr. John Mowforth, of Grasmere, removed a pioneer settler of the Albany district. Born at Cottingham, Yorkshire, in 1857, the late Mr. Mowforth came to the Albany district in 1890, and conducted a dairy for several years before settling at Grasmere. He was one of the first settlers in the district, which was then virgin bush, but he foresaw the possibilities latent in the rich swamp lands. He concentrated mainly on growing such crops as cabbages which found a ready market on the goldfields. As this industry became less profitable, he turned to potato growing, and became one of the foremost growers in the state. The Albany Advertiser. W. A., 17th August 1942. IN MEMORIAM. The Albany Advertiser, W. A., 4th October 1924. PERSONAL. Mr. Leonard W. Mowforth, a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Mowforth, of Grassmere, spent Wednesday in Albany, renewing association of former days. He was a through passenger for Sydney by the White Star liner Ceramic, on holiday bent. It is seventeen years since Mr. Mowforth took up residence in South Africa and he now holds the post on of Acting Chief Clerk in the Pretoria division of the Union Railway Service.
