I've "rescued" an old photograph of Rose JENKINS which was taken at the A. B. Buell Studio in Hackettstown, NJ sometime in the 1880's. Rose appears to be in her teens at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Rose and her family: Rosa B. HANKINSON JENKINS was b. 31 Jan 1877 in Independence, NJ to parents John S. HANKINSON (1838-1921) and Lydia Price TIMS (1842-1923). Rosa was one of three children born to this couple including, Avaretta; Adel; and Rosa HANKINSON all born between 1864 and 1877. Rosa married Charles JENKINS (b. 1876) and together they had 4 children including a daughter Frances L. JENKINS (1910-1914). Rose or Rosa died 27 Dec 1919 and is buried in the Union Cemetery in Hackettstown, NJ. Census records provide the following information: 1880 census of Hackettstown, NJ: John HANKINSON, age 42, a Huckster, born NJ, parents born NJ Lydia HANKINSON, wife, age 37, Keeping House, born NJ, parents born NJ Avaretta HANKINSON, dau, age 15, at School, born NJ Adel HANKINSON, dau, age 13, at School, born NJ Rosa B. A photo of Sam Schiereman, my grandfather, at the Factory c. 1920. Sam Schiereman came over from Eastern Europe with other Jewish immigrants in the early 1900s. He came in to Canada because the restrictions were less. He learned how to skin and prepare furs in Canada which led to his job here in Newark, NJ at Hollanders Furs with his factory mates. He is circled above. He also was the only one to be able to read English, so he read the paper to his friends every day.

A photo of Harold Schiereman. Going with the trend of naked babies in those days, this is my father with his mother, born in 1916, in the Ironbound section of Newark, NJ. Harold Schiereman (changed to Sherman eventually) moved with his family to Long Branch NJ on the NJ Shore. His mother Lillian and father Sam came from Eastern Europe in the early 1900's with a wave of many displaced Jews. Sam met my grandma, at a dress factory in Greenwich Village, NY. He bought her a ready to wear dress! Pop Sam later worked cutting fur skins at Hollander furs in Newark and then Long Branch where the owners took off with all the immigrant's pensions. My father grew up to be the first in the family to go to college-- Monmouth College in its infancy, and NYU later on. He fought in the Phillipines during WW2, and met my mother at the boardwalk in Asbury Park. He died in 1987, with many mourning his high spirit and intellectual knowledge.
