William J. Phillips
William J. Phillips
William J. (Jasper) Phillips, either the father or uncle of Eula Mae Coleman Phillips, wife of Joseph Manton Jarrell. I had thought this was her father, but now suspect it is in fact her uncle. He raised her, but there is no record of him ever being married. If anyone had any information on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I know these are Jarrell children, either the children or grandchildren of Joseph Manton Jarrell, of Clarksville, Montgomery Co., TN. But I recognize NONE of them. If you do, please contact me and let me know who they are.

From left: Joe Manning, Joseph Manton Jarrell, Charles Shelby Jarrell, and John Suter. Joseph was an engineer for the State of TN, and designed the alarm system for Clarksvilles' fire dept. Charles is his son. Joe and John were either employees at JM Jarrells' wagon shop, or fire fighters themselves. As Joseph had a wagon shop, it is entirely possible that he also built this particular engine. The writing on the picture is that of Frank Gracey Jarrell, Josephs' son.

2020 marks 20 years since the inception of AncientFaces. We are the same team who began this community so long ago. Over the years it feels, at least to us, that our family has expanded to include so many. Thank you!

Jarrell Orchestra
Jarrell Orchestra
Charles Shelby Jarrell arranged and conducted an orchestra for his own radio program on WSB in the 30's. No TV then so it was very prestigious. WSB was only one of a few stations in Atlanta and by far the most powerful. It was geared toward "shut-ins" or people that couldn't go to church on Sunday although it was not a church service. He would take them to the "Little Church in the Wildwood" for music and messages. Then drop by the old wishing well for wishes for those in need. (There really was a wishing well). He met Opal Virginia Williams who was going to perform a song in a rehearsal and the rest is history.
The broadcast was done in the old Biltmore hotel and the old WSB radio towers still stand today on the hotel. The studio was on the top floor. Charles did weekend "big band" dances in the Biltmore ball room on Saturdays. Oddly enough it was named "The Jarrell Orchestra".

Charles is on the far right, behind the microphone.
