He liked music, and early in life played banjo and sang in a small dance "combo". An organized thinker, he adapted well to life in the U.S. Army, with which he joined active service early in 1942. He was overseas for 3 years, during which time his beloved mother passed away. Not long after his return, he married Lois Rottluff, then a resident of Portland, OR, where they lived until 1948 when their first daughter, Julaine, was born. An employee of the U.S. Postal Service, he was then able to transfer from Portland to a small town in northernmost California, Yreka. A second daughter, Markita, joined the family in 1952; the Haradens continued residence in Yreka, where Lois and Rip lived until their deaths, respectively in 1994 and 2005.
