My Mom was a special person. She was a Social Worker, a Community Organizer & Leader, a Democratic Party Political Activist. She was known by most of the local, state, and national leaders among them all three Kennedy brothers, countless mayors and high level politicians. She helped many many people, and her home was always open to all kinds of people regardless of race, nationality, sexual orientation, etc. She knew celebrities, political rabble rousers like the Young Lords, El Comite, La Raza, Black Panthers, Jewish Defense League, and others. She was active in social and civil rights for all. Everyone who met her loved her and called her Mama. She was fluent in English, Spanish, and conversational French. She wrote songs and poetry, could play a bit of guitar, and had a vibrant personality. She reminded me of the character from the book and movie "Auntie Mame." When she passed away it was mentioned on Spanish radio in NY, her wake was attended by our Congressman Ted Weiss, and other friends and public officials. She was a widowed Mother of three children my brothers Francis (who at the age of 8 developed a Brain Tumor) and remained till his passing at 44 with severe grand mal epilepsy and a mental age of 8-10 years old. He was full of love, bright, and wisdom. My other brother Michael was born with severe Cerebral Palsy and lived with us until he had to be institutionalized. And lastly me Herman, the youngest who luckily had and have (thank God) little in the way of physical maladies other than vision extreme myopia, astigmatism, and more recently keratokonus. She raised us to be good, decent, and spiritual people. She was proud of us as good children and adults and we were proud of her. We weren't rich but she tried to give us all we needed and we never lacked. I miss her every day. Photo of Isabelle Rodriguez Isabelle Rodriguez
