Pearl W. (Wise) Clavelle was born to Glence Wise Sr. (1894 - 1959) and Permella Carpenter (1897 - 1970). Both of her parents were born in Louisiana. She had full siblings: Phillip, Lucy, Mindy, Ellen, Hattie, Mary, Nettie, Lionel, Bettye, and Ruby, plus two more sisters. She also had half sibling Edgar Wise.
