NOT MY FAMILY...photo found in an antique store in Clovis, California. Back says "Anthony F. Metrick, Daddy's First Communion, Holy Thursday 1917".. Anthony was the son of Anton Joseph Metricks (born 1895) and Josephine Nanny Jagmin. Brother to Stanley Metrick, whose photo is also on this site.

Doris Stevens - Woman's Party jailed
Doris Stevens wrote "Jailed for Freedom" and was the youngest member of the national executive committee of the National Woman's Party, an organization that worked for women's suffrage.
She picketed, along with others, at the White House in 1917 and was arrested and sentenced to 60 days in the Occoquan Workhouse (VA). This photo was taken at that time.

They had women as subway guards in New York in 1917? I guess so - women porters, women guards, and women couldn't vote! Guess women could work - but then we've always worked. It would be difficult to chase a stile jumper or a mugger in that skirt.
