Born in southeast Ohio, Robert "bobby" was a man whose father (George Allen W) abandoned him at birth, and whose mother (Merle ) left him with a family member at 6years old. He then was passed from friends and relatives over the next four year during a time when finances were hard on everyone, yet his real parents never entered back into the picture during his formative years. Robert lived in 17 different homes by the age of ten. Think about that for a minute...
Everything started to change for him when Maude (his mother's sister) and her husband Barney took him in. He lived with them through his graduation from Corning Ohio high school.
With this kind of an example, father and mother walking out on him, family passing him around, how does this lack of parental foundation allow a man to raise a family of seven, stay married for life, become a noted figure working with troubled youth, be a basketball, baseball, and track coach that Wadsworth Ohio police would ask him, repeatedly, to step in when they ran across a young boy who was on the wrong path, how does a man like Robert find it within him to be a more responsible figure than anyone he had in his life up to the age of ten. How can a person feeling so much rejection mold himself into being someone everyone else could count on?
I asked him once if he ever felt like he'd had enough of everyone wanting some of his time. If he ever felt like stepping away from responsibility... After some thought, he answered: "yes. At times it gets overwhelming, but I would immediately think; 'I am not going to do what my dad did."
I, and my five brothers and a sister, are proud we had the parents we had...as are all the young men who also call our father "stepdad, my other dad, and friend".
