Joan was born in 1938 in Moline, IL to Thomas and Mary Carpenter. She had two younger sisters and a younger brother. The family lived in North Dakota and Minnesota prior to moving to Juneau, AK after Mr. Carpenter accepted work at the Juneau Municipal Airport. Joan spoke fondly of summers spent swimming at the lake in Park Rapids, MN when she was a kid. Later on at Juneau High School she played the drums as a member of the school band. Her favorite subject was English, and she developed excellent note-taking and written communication skills that served her well over a lifetime of secretarial work. Soon after graduating from JHS she married Ed Krause, also a JHS graduate. They had three boys named Curtis, Kenneth, and Calvin. Curtis lives in TX, Calvin in AK. Kenneth preceded her in death, and Ed, her former spouse, passed away in 2017. Joan enjoyed reading, doing yard work, and baking her homemade pies and specially made cheesecake. She also enjoyed being out on the road traveling, witnessing firsthand the many beautiful places and points of interest in this Country. Hers was a life lived in a number of different cities and states. One of Joan's favorite writers was the late Rod Serling. He said, "We are all travelers on this Earth. We all start from a place called birth and end up at a lonely place called death." I believe we are all travelers after death as well. I believe this wonderful Christian mother of mine has gone on to a truly peaceful and restful place, which brings me great comfort. Joan was cremated. Photo of Joan Krause Joan Krause
