Trueman Farm
The "Home Farm" in Truemanville, NS, is located 8.3 miles (13.3 km) east of Amherst, NS, on Highway # 6 (The Sunrise Trail). It consisted of approx. 325 acres (131.5 hectares) of cleared land and 225 acres (91 ha) of woodland (mixed hardwood and Eastern Spruce). The house pictured here was built in 1892 on the site of the old homestead established in 1853 by William Trueman (1807 - 1889) and Esther Ripley (1808 - 1892). The long barn was moved back from the road allowance by George W. Trueman in 1920 when the road was improved. the existing foundations date from that period. The barn was flattened by an eastern gale 2 Feb 1976. The house and all the acrage behind the barn has since passed out of the ownership of the Trueman Family.

The original of this picture is printed on tin - an example of the early photographic art - "tintype". It came in an old oval frame itself over 100 years old. The people are Jane Ripley (1788-1861) and her husband, William Trueman (1780-1861), the second grandson of the original settler who landed at Fort Cumberland (Fort Beauséjour) in May 1774 off the ship Albion that had sailed from Hull, England. The original family came from the Hawnby area of Yorkshire, North Riding.
